Claude Code: A Practical Look at Agentic AI

Written by Jeremy Zimmer | Aug 21, 2026, 12:06:54 PM

What if an AI assistant could do more than answer questions? What if you could give it a task and let it work directly with the files, tools, and information you already use?

That is the idea behind Claude Code.

In the newest course in our AI Apps & Agents Series, instructor Brian Brinkman explores Claude Code and shows why a tool originally associated with software development can be useful far beyond coding.

In about 15 minutes, you'll see what it looks like to move from prompting AI for individual outputs to delegating multi-step work to an AI agent.

What Is Claude Code?

Claude Code is an agentic AI tool that can interact with files and tools on your computer to complete work.

That distinction matters. Instead of simply asking a chatbot a question and receiving a response, Claude Code can work through tasks using the information and resources available to it.

In this course, you'll see examples of Claude Code analyzing information, building an interactive analytics dashboard, and creating a client-ready estimate using existing templates and information.

The goal is not to turn you into a developer. It's to help you understand what becomes possible when AI can move beyond chat and start working through real processes.

What You'll Learn

This beginner-to-intermediate course gives you a practical introduction to Claude Code and the building blocks that shape how it works.

You'll learn how to:

  • Understand what Claude Code is and how it differs from a traditional AI chat experience.
  • See Claude Code tackle real professional work, including data analysis, dashboard creation, and producing a finished estimate.
  • Extend Claude Code with skills and connectors that provide additional context and capabilities for recurring workflows.
  • Understand models, context, and usage limits and how they affect your experience.
  • Manage permissions thoughtfully when an AI agent can access files and take actions on your computer.
  • Identify repetitive, multi-step, or information-heavy tasks in your own workflow that could potentially be delegated to an AI agent.

One of the most useful parts of the course is seeing these concepts come together in complete workflows rather than isolated prompts.

From Asking AI to Delegating Work

For many professionals, using generative AI still means opening a chatbot, asking a question, getting an output, and then taking the next step themselves.

Claude Code introduces a different way of thinking about AI.

Instead of asking, "What can I ask AI?" the course encourages you to consider, "What work could I give an AI agent to do?"

You'll see how Claude Code can work with existing information to analyze data and create finished deliverables. You'll also get introduced to skills and connectors, along with the models, context, usage limits, and permissions that are important to understand as you give an agent access to more of your tools and information.

That last piece is especially important. More capable agents require thoughtful decisions about what they can access and what actions they're authorized to take.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is designed for AI-curious professionals who may have assumed that a product with "Code" in its name isn't relevant to them.

It's also a fit for knowledge workers who regularly work across files, data, reports, templates, and repeatable processes; team leads evaluating what agentic AI can accomplish beyond chat; and power users who are ready to explore delegating larger, multi-step workflows to AI.

No matter where you fall, the course offers practical examples to help you evaluate where a tool like Claude Code could fit into your work.
